Modularisation

Modularisation

As part of an Innovate UK project, we worked on a prefabricated, re-usable structural slab made from recycled steel and low-carbon concrete.

These prefabricated, low-carbon structural panels aimed to transform both the cement and steel industries, making them more energy-efficient and competitive in a climate where sustainability was not a luxury but a necessity.

This work was carried out specifically for the Palmerston Court project in London, where innovative construction methods and sustainable materials were central to the development’s goals.

Reuse

Steel is eminently recyclable and it is becoming more common for it to be reused within buildings. To do this requires a careful focus on design, as such we work closely with clients and engineers to ensure designs are created to the minimum weight. We can then help identify reuse opportunities. Successful examples of where we have enabled steel to be reused on projects include 30 Duke Street, Timber Square, 2 Aldermanbury Square, 2 Finsbury Avenue, and Broadgate Tower.

The BCSA Re-use Committee, which is chaired by our own Jonathan Davis, focuses on sharing experience and developing guidance related to the safe reuse of structural steelwork.

Hybrid Structures

Hybrid Structures is a dedicated division of the William Hare Group, specialising in the design, manufacture, and construction of innovative buildings that integrate multiple structural materials. By combining structural steel with engineered timber products such as Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT), Glulam beams, and timber cassettes, Hybrid Structures offers versatile solutions that meet both sustainability requirements and the evolving demands of modern architecture.

This solution allows for greater design flexibility, enabling our clients to explore creative possibilities while enhancing sustainability. The use of timber elements not only reduces the carbon footprint of buildings but also contributes to a unique aesthetic that distinguishes hybrid structures from traditional steel constructions.
